Topicala People! and Topicala Popular! BETA

Paul Kinlan

I've launched two new beta features for Topicala: Topicala Popular and Topicala People. Topicala Popular helps you discover trending content online, similar to Digg or Delicious, by tracking site visitors via an embedded image. Topicala People helps you find people online using hCard microformats. You can get your information on Topicala People by wrapping it in hCards and either including the Topicala image or pinging our server. These features will soon integrate directly into Topicala's main search. Try them out and let me know your feedback!

Suggestions for finding related blogs

Paul Kinlan

I'm developing Ajax Tagger 2.0 and need ideas for displaying related blogs within the application and its output. I'm also searching for a good search engine (besides Technorati and Google) to find related blogs and feeds. Any suggestions? Please email me or leave a comment.

Search Engine Results

Paul Kinlan

My website traffic this month is unusually high, almost matching the entire previous month's traffic in just eight days. Google seems to be the primary driver of this surge, sending a significantly larger number of visitors compared to other search engines like Yahoo and MSN. A majority of the searches are related to C#, which suggests I should continue focusing on that topic in my future posts.

Paul Kinlan

Technorati is fast, but I have to ping them. With Google, it just worked automatically. Big kudos to Google and possibly Blogger for the seamless integration!

MSN is launching APIs on Tuesday, September 13th, allowing developers to access their search results. More information will be available on the MSN developer site. I plan to explore these APIs and discuss my findings on this blog and on tagger.kinlan.co.uk. I hope they offer innovative features beyond basic search result access, similar to Yahoo's related searches, contextual searches, and term extraction.

Question About Site Searches

Paul Kinlan

I'm having a hard time finding content on my own website, so I'm looking for a good site search engine. I'm considering Google Site Search for potential ad revenue but don't think that is important. Any recommendations for good, free site search software? Email me at paul.kinlan@gmail.com or leave a comment if you have suggestions.

MSN Bot

Paul Kinlan

My site's bandwidth usage spiked mid-month, and I discovered the culprit was MSN Bot repeatedly accessing my Atom.xml feed. It was hitting my feed every minute, consuming a significant portion of my bandwidth. The bot is apparently part of a syndication search engine, constantly checking for new content. I added a robots.txt file to throttle the bot's access frequency, which solved the issue.
